Week One: Tell Me More, Tell Me More!

During Week One, the teachers taught a unit about personal communication.  They discussed verbal and nonverbal communication, gestures, facial expressions, greetings, speeches, slang, jargon, and many other topics.  Their curriculum materials were developed in advance, and contained many options and activities for the students.

There were four classes of students in the Summer English Program: Class A, B, C, and D.  Classes A and B consisted of first-year high school students. Class C consisted of second-year high school students. And Class D was a special class, consisting of elementary and middle school students!

In addition to teaching their classes, the teachers presented an afternoon seminar to the San Sin teachers and visitors on "Teacher Education in Florida."  Dr. O'Kon reviewed required education coursework, field experiences, certification tests, and Alternative Certification options.  Gabriela discussed teaching English as a second language, areas of language learning, and stages of second language acquisition. Michaela talked about Exceptional Student Education and programs serving the students.  Danielle spoke about teaching elementary students, the Common Core, and the Florida Standards Assessment test. Elaney presented information on college life in the U.S. and the opportunities she has experienced as a college student through the TCC International Student Organization and other involvements.
